Solid Wood Furnitures Buying Guide

This solid wood furniture buying guide looks into facts about purchasing traditional furniture in solid wood. To begin with, if you really like preserving furniture, you ought to ask yourself a few questions before you start the hunt.

1. What is the particular styling you are looking for?
2. How long do you wish to keep the furniture?
3. Does it require regular maintenance?
4. Is it too outdated to be out of vogue say ten years from now?
5. Would you get bored looking at it some years from now?

Most of us like to preserve furniture for the value it holds. The style and theme, or something from the era that makes all the spending worthwhile!

Solid wood or Hardwood furniture: It is important to know the difference between hardwoods and softwood. Hardwood is sourced from non-needled tree like maple, cherry or mahogany. The wood is reputed for its women's coats robustness and durability, but is difficult for any carving and detailed form of wood work. Make sure solid wood furniture actually has solid wood on all furniture parts and pieces. Also, solid wood expands and contracts as per temperature and humidity changes, so furniture done in plywood and framed in veneered solid wood may be a good idea to purchase.

Solid woods are dried slowly in kilns till it retains about six percent moisture content. Then it is cut and shaped into pieces that provide the structural integrity of the furniture. Such solid wood pieces may include legs, casing and details that support the furniture. The joints are often given additional strength with bonding glues. To ensure a good job and whether furniture is properly joined, you can lift it by one corner and see. On lifting, the furniture should stay firm and retain its shape without racking or twisting.

Softwoods: Derived from needle-bearing trees such as pine or cedar, softwood is great for carving and their surface can be carved, but the wood may look weathered due to its soft surface that can easily be marked and blemished

Plywood and Particle Board : Use of non-solid wood to construct furniture has been the most misunderstood concept. As solid wood can expand and contract as per humidity changes in the weather, it is important to use plywood or ground wood to help with achieving a stable and user-friendly product. Especially in door and table construction, solid wood needs to have a flat base to reinforce the required stability. Plywood products manufactured of ground up wood are robust and less prone to warp or split. These large flat panels are usually framed in solid wood and covered by veneers to recreate the look of one large piece of wood. Veneering is a process by itself, and is explained in the next point.

Veneers : Veneering is a process that allows the natural grain to emerge beautifully on the surface. Traditional bedroom furniture and dining tabletops and dressers used veneering with a thin slice of wood selected for its outstanding character. Veneering has been used traditionally, dating back to ancient Egypt and Rome in the 17th Century. We find wood veneers in different types of furniture and pricing today. The advantages of veneering are many. In covering the core panels, veneers are often applied fashioning patterns that actually enhance the beauty of any furniture piece by many folds. Usually, more expensive woods which would be too costly or fragile to use as structural parts are used as veneers.

The Finish : Finishing plays a vital role in the appearance of any furniture. The finest furniture sold these days usually involves an intricate finishing process to achieve the flawless look. Involving different steps, once a furniture piece is ready it is thoroughly sanded or wiped. To highlight the wood grain, sometimes steel wool is used. For traditional designs, fly specking or distressing is undertaken to bestow the piece with antique looks.

Later, a sanding sealer is applied during final finish. A final sanding is done prior to the application of the top coat. Also, lacquering is done; it is used during last step for the final look, giving the piece its finished appearance. Lacquering whether done in matt, flat or glossy finish can endow a piece with great beauty and also make it waterproof and durable for the long run.

Engraving or Printing : Veneering is a costly process and to cut the cost, there is a method that is used to reproduce the wood grain. The wooden image is applied on top of flat panels like a look alike. If you are looking for the original thing, try to check the surface closely, when engraved, the grain will look even and uniform, almost flawless with no texture variation which is a sign that it can?€?t be done from a piece of wood. Engraving and printing is normally done on the insides of a furniture piece that makes the finish less expensive. However, one of the major drawbacks of such an alternative is that it is not resistant and the grains may easily come off when exposed to water or any solvent.

For solid wood furniture like cabinets and storage units, you may want to make sure that the drawers are jointly secure and dovetailed for easy gliding. Also, pay attention to the doors so that they swing open easily without squeaking or rubbing, and that long doors are attached with study hinges. Practical details should help you check out with the manufacturer before you make the move.

10 Ways to Enhance Your Home's Curb Appeal This Weekend

We've all heard the saying "You only get one chance to make a good first impression." Proudly showing off your home's exterior sets the stage for what's to come, and gives the impression that it's loved inside women's coats and out. Whether you're planning to sell, or live there for years to come, there are very simple cost effective ways to spruce up your home's curb appeal.

Here are some projects you can do this weekend to give your home the boost it needs. It just takes a bit of creativity and.... elbow grease!

1. Maintenance. Start by cleaning up your yard. Make sure tools or equipment are neatly stored in your shed or garage. Kill any weeds poking through the cracks in the driveway and walkway, and give those surfaces a good power spray. This will clean away any discoloration and old grease stains. Remove any overgrown weeds, dead plants and flowers throughout your property. Trim all shrubs and trees particularly if they're obstructing your front door. Have your lawn mowed once a week and add sod to dead spots when needed.

2. Windows. Clean windows inside and out so they sparkle and shine. Make sure the window coverings used on the interior are not distracting from the exterior. If the style of architecture allows, install some charming window boxes planted with your favorite plants and flowers for a burst of color.

3. Gutters and Downspouts. Walk around the perimeter of your home and make sure all your gutters and downspouts are clean and tightly connected. If they're in need of serious repair then replace them. They typically charge per linear foot.

4. Paint. If the paint on your house looks gray, cracked and weathered then it's time for a fresh coat of paint. Either tackle it yourself, or hire a professional to help. If cost and time are factors simply paint out the front door, window trims, shutters and any fencing in a fresh new color.

5. Landscaping. Adding shrubs, flowers or container gardens add instant impact to your front yard. Create an inviting entrance by investing in a pair of architectural pots, fill them with flowering plants, and place them on the landing flanking the front door. Dig a new planting bed for flowers along the driveway or in front of your house.

6. Details. If the front of your home is void of details, then create some! Draw attention to your entryway by adding some chunky molding. Create some visual interest by installing new window trim and shutters. You may even consider incorporating a charming new fence, trellis, or water feature.

7. Lighting. If your front entry fixtures are worn, cracked or rusted, replace them. Create a sense of drama by adding some low voltage or solar garden lights along your sidewalk and driveway. It's a fabulous way to provide you with extra illumination and a little added security.

8. Hardscaping. If you have a front porch, arbor, or trellis make sure they are in pristine condition and paint or stain the wood to look like new. Consider tiling your front doorstep creating a permanent welcome mat, or introduce a natural stone border along the sidewalk or driveway.

9. Roofing. If you need a brand new roof then it's not a weekend project. But make sure you do replace any cracked or missing tiles or shingles where needed. A roof could potentially cover anywhere from 40%-60% of your home's overall visual appearance, so make sure it's in good condition.

10. Hardware. Time to shop. Replace your old front door handle, mailbox, house numbers and knockers for a fresh new look. They don't need to be expensive pieces. Get rid of the old shiny brass hardware and introduce some antique copper, bronze or brushed nickel. Doesn't your home deserve some new jewelry?

Improving your home's curb appeal doesn't need to be extensive or expensive. Some cleaning, fresh paint, accent lighting and a few new accessories may be all it needs. Take pride and enjoy it!

8 Most FAQ's About Roof Cleaning

As a home owner, you are aware that your home is probab women's jackets online ly your largest investment and that taking care of it is an important necessity in maintaining its value. Unlike the inside of your home, the exterior is exposed for all to see, and it can reflect heavily on your image.

Maintaining great curb appeal is pretty high up on the maintenance budget. Lawn care services, landscape maintenance, painting projects, and exterior cleaning are all definite home improvements that give you the best bang for your buck. There is nothing that screams curb appeal more than a good house cleaning, fresh mulch, trimmed shrubbery and a thick green lawn.

One of the biggest eye sores and curb appeal killers is roof algae. Roof algae appear as black stains or streaks on your roof's shingles. It can really take away from the beauty of an otherwise gorgeous home. So what can be done about these unsightly black streaks? We will answer this question and some of the other most frequently asked questions about roof cleaning.

Q: Can this roof alga be removed?

A: The good news is yes. Roof cleaning is a service offered by many professional exterior cleaning companies. The roof alga can be killed and removed safely to restore your roof's appearance.

Q: Will cleaning my roof damage the shingles?

A: When the wrong methods are used, the answer is yes. Inexperienced contractors or home owners can easily damage shingles by removing excessive amounts of shingle granules, which are there to protect the shingles. The main culprit of roof cleaning damage is using too much water pressure to blast the shingles clean. Never allow a pressure washer to be used on your roof!

Q: So, how can the shingles be cleaned without causing damage?

A: By using the low pressure methods recommended by the shingle manufacturers themselves. The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Association, GAF, and Owens Corning have all suggested cleaning methods and solutions to clean roofs suffering from roof algae. They recommend using a low pressure chemical application followed by a low pressure rinse.

Q: What is the solution that will be used on my shingles?

A: The proper cleaning solution that is recommended by ARMA, GAF, and Owens Corning is a bleach- based roof cleaner. This type of cleaner is effective in killing the algae when applied with low pressure. A light rinse is then needed to wash the dead algae off the roof to restore its original appearance.

Q: Do some of the other lye or sodium hydroxide-based roof cleaners work well?

A: Unfortunately, they do not. The shingle manufacturers do not recommend these products because they are not very effective. They only work when used in conjunction with excessive pressure from a pressure washer, which leads to lessened longevity of the roof. When not used with pressure, some of these products even state on the label that the roof may take 2-3 months to begin appearing clean after an application, and in some cases more than one application is necessary.

Q: Will the bleach-based products harm my landscaping?

A: It can when handled improperly; after all, roof algae are plants. You've probably used bleach before when doing laundry, right? Would you give the same gallon jug of bleach to a 4 year-old and tell them to do the whites with it? Of course you wouldn't; because in the wrong hands it can be harmful either to them or your clothes. Well, it's the same thing with roof cleaning. This is why it is important to let a roof cleaning professional clean the roof for you. They will know how to handle the cleaner to protect themselves and your property from damage.

Q: How long will my roof stay clean?

A: There are some biocides and sealers on the market that claim to keep the algae away for good, but their test results are very limited so no one really knows. The best thing to do after getting your roof cleaned is to sign up on the cleaning company's maintenance plan. For a fraction of the original cost they will come out every year or two and give your roof a maintenance coat so the algae doesn't return.

Q: When I do get a new roof, are algae-resistant shingles effective?

A: Well, they call them algae-resistant (not algae-proof) for one simple reason; they help in eradicating the roof algae problem but they aren't a full proof answer (not yet anyway). As a roof cleaning contractor, I have seen algae-resistant shingles suffering from roof algae, so a low pressure roof cleaning was still necessary.

Wrought Iron Wall Decor - It Breathes New Life into a Room

The simplest and easiest way to breathe new life into a room is by changing your wall decor. Wrought iron wall decor with j women's coats ust the right piece will produce a classy elegant look even to the most modest of homes. Best of all you can make this happen quickly and effortlessly.

If you love the romantic style and aura of wrought iron like me, then you'll want many items made from this metal. It looks great in any room on any wall.? Lucky for us we won't have to look far. It is becoming easier to find and more affordable then ever. Here are just a few wall decor items that are made from this metal such as: wall grills, wall plaques, frames, vases, wine racks, sconces, sculptures, tapestry hardware, hooks and wall hanging designs.

Many pieces are available in all styles of decor. So you need not worry if your style is modern or vintage, you will find the piece that matches your personality and tastes. In some of my rooms I have blended styles together. On one wall there is a French style wine rack and on the opposite wall proudly hung is a modern metal abstract piece of art. I must admit they work well together.

There are certain factors and guidelines to follow when hanging this style of wall decor. You should relate your wall decor size to the wall size. Choose smaller pieces for narrow walls and larger works for big wall spaces. Hang your longer pieces or groupings in a horizontal line. This tends to create a calming feel and gives the illusion of width to a narrow room. This method works perfect for most entryways.

If you take different shapes and sizes and then group them together this instantly adds depth and interest to that wall. Or another option is to choose a single large piece to bring focus to the wall and this will avoid a cluttered look. Whatever wrought iron wall decor piece it is, make sure you hang it so that the center point of the piece or grouping is at eye level for the average person. No higher or no lower.

You can also alter the color of wrought iron to help complement your room's decor with a fresh coat of paint. There are also pieces readily available in distressed white and verdigris finishes. These tend to add a different dimension and uniqueness to your walls.

The variety of these metal wall hangings prevents the wall from becoming to busy and versatility is clearly the strength of this material. These accent pieces can be functional or simply to make a tasteful and beautiful fashion statement.

If wrought iron could be described in one word it would be sturdy. This long lasting material never goes out of style. Because of this feature, this metal artwork can become a family heirloom being passed down from generation to generation.

You should let your imagination and creativity run wild. In other words don't be afraid to use wrought iron decor in unexpected places. For an example I have placed a wrought iron wall plaque above the mirror in my bathroom. The phrase upon it states, "To make the best of today don't wait for tomorrow." I see it first thing in the morning and it helps me get in the right mood for the day ahead.

To help maintain your wrought iron wall decor, make certain that you regularly inspect them. This will help keep them looking new. You can use mild soap and water to clean them and then dry them with a clean cloth. There is a specialty wax you can purchase that is designed to protect the iron from any damage that may occur in the future.

Home decorating with wrought iron has a long history and remains popular today. It will never become obsolete and will add beauty and grace to your home for years to come.

Basic Ways To Look After Horse Health

Horses are living creatures with needs and emotions. But if you love horses, you don't need to be told that. And like all living creatures, they need to be kept healthy if they are to be happy and successful. However, this world can be tough, and "nature red in tooth and claw" has a number of threats to horse health that a wise owner will want to watch out for.

Living conditions are the first consideration when it comes to horse health. If a horse is kept stabled, the stable will need to be kept free from damp and mould - and, to consider the opposite extreme, protected from excessive heat.
The straw or other bedding used to cover the floor of the stable should be mucked out regularly, preferably daily, and care should be taken that the new bedding is free from mould, damp or mildew. The stable should also be checked carefully to make sure that there are no sharp edges that a horse can cut itself on.

If a horse is kept in pasture, a shelter of some kind must be provided so the horse can find shade from excessive heat, or cover from rain. The field must also be checked to ensure that no poisonous plants such as nightshade or hemlock are growing in it or near it where the horse can eat them. Fencing should be checked to make sure that the horse cannot escape and that it has no sharp projections that a horse could cut itself on if it uses the fence to itch itself.

Correct feeding is another vital aspect of horse health. While it is obvious that malnutrition is bad for any horse, excessive or incorrect feeding can also be a threat to horse health. Colic can be caused by eating the wrong sort of food, such as under-ripe apples are notorious and eating too much can cause a horse to founder and run the risk of laminitis.

Stabled horses, in particular, require especial care for their diets. The right proportion of energy foods should be given according to the work the horse is performing. Fresh food, such as raw fruits and vegetables, will be a welcome addition to a horse????????s diet, and it stands to reason that horse health as well as human health will benefit from the vitamins provided by these.

Horses, like other companion and working animals, need protection and medication to ensure that they are free from parasites. Veterinarians recommend that horses be wormed twice a year, preferably in autumn and spring, to ensure optimum horse health.

Mucking out stables and/or pasture frequently is another important part of controlling parasites. In this respect, keeping a horse at pasture can be an advantage, as a horse can be moved from field to field, thus ensuring that any parasites in the dung will die and/or be dispersed before the horse returns to that particular field again.

On a day to day basis, the most important part of horse health is regular interaction between horse and rider. Daily grooming, feeding and riding is not only the source of much pleasure for both horse and human, but it also gives the rider/owner a chance to make sure that their horse remains in good condition.

By interacting with a horse daily, it is very easy to see if the horse is showing any signs of poor health, such as poor coat condition, mu women's jackets cus in the eyes, scouring (diarrhoea), strange lumps or cuts. But if you love horses, you'll be spending time with your horse, anyway.
